Statistics Reveal What the Score Hides

A score of 28-24 says nothing about how the game was actually played. Two teams can produce the same result while telling completely different stories.


What data allows you to see is what's happening beneath the surface. The underlying trends, the recurring patterns, the moments when a team loses control before anyone has noticed.


Here are five statistics that are changing the way handball is understood today:



1. The Goalkeeper's Impact, Well Beyond the Spectacular Saves

A goalkeeper who saves between 30% and 35% of shots on target is considered to be performing well. Below that, it's a point of concern. Above it, it's a decisive advantage.

But efficiency alone isn't enough. What also matters is understanding the distribution of shots by phase of play, the trigger zones (6m, 9m or from the wings), and the impact zones, in order to get a clearer reading of the goalkeeper's performance.

2. Goals Scored and Conceded by Period. When Does the Game Tip?

Handball doesn't unfold evenly over 60 minutes. The game is punctuated by high points and low points that sometimes repeat themselves game after game. Some teams dominate the first ten minutes then ease off. Others start slowly and accelerate towards the end. Others still systematically collapse in the last five minutes of each half, without ever knowing it, because nobody looked.


A flaw that keeps repeating without being seen isn't a rough patch. It's a structural problem.

3. Goals Conceded After a Turnover Is One of the Most Underrated Indicators

This is one of the most revealing statistics in modern handball. Every turnover is a counter-attack opportunity for the opponent. And in a sport as fast as handball, transitions often end in a goal. A team that loses a lot of balls in the wrong areas doesn't always see it in the immediate score, but they pay for it over time.


This indicator should be cross-referenced with your opponent's data. Some games involve more turnovers than others. Which team is losing the most, and which one is benefiting the most? The game can be decided on this single statistic. Turnovers can completely change the shape of a match.


In a tight game, it's not always the best shooters who make the difference. It's the teams that lose the fewest balls.


4. Shooting Efficiency: Not Just How Many, But How

Shooting efficiency, by zone and at key moments in the game, reveals things the eye doesn't catch. A player who is predictable in their shot choices will be neutralised by an attentive goalkeeper. A player who shoots too often off balance lets their team down in ways the score doesn't clearly show.


Shooting efficiency also needs to be evaluated by phase of play. Success rates on counter-attacks will naturally be higher than on set plays. How does your team behave depending on the phase of play? The score will never tell you.


These nuances show up in the numbers. Rarely to the naked eye.

An opposing player whose shooting habits and tendencies you know is no longer a threat. They're an opportunity for your team.

5. Managing the Money-Time

Winning or losing a game can come down to the money-time, the last 5 to 10 minutes of the match. How does your team behave during this period when the gap is three goals or fewer?

Is this behaviour recurring? Which players are involved? Understanding these parameters can have a significant impact on your coaching. Some players perform better under pressure than others, and that has nothing to do with their overall quality. It's the context that shapes it.


A well-prepared money-time means:

  • knowing which players perform under pressure

  • understanding the opponent's patterns in tight moments

  • having the right rotations ready before the situation even arises
